I'll take a guess to mixture - either caused by ageing control pressure regulator or some small air leak - cold engine gets additional fuel by cold start valve while warm is unlikely to get such enrichment. But that's just guess.

My 2p's worth says fuel, my b3 2.2E (KV) did this, exactly as you say and always at a petrol station In my case it was the fuel pump. It would run great but once turned off it wouldn't restart. I found sometimes if I tapped the pump under the car i could coax it back to life to get me off the forecourt!

My current 2.2 KV quattro had a similar fault when i bought it, but this time it would also cut out when driving, usually after kangarooing slightly. I changed the pump in light of the above, but in this case it was the relay overheating and cutting off the feed to the fuel pump (it would be physically hot to the touch!) when it cooled down it would be fine again. Needless to say i changed it as soon as i got onto it and it has never happened again. I would check the relay but if it doesnt cut out while driving, check the pump

I replaced the relay but it made no difference. Will look at the pump. Cheers

Default Solved

Ive been working on the car all day on various things. This morning I relooked at my starting problem - noticed that the fuel pump wasnt whirring like it normally does when cold. So I had a hunch that perhaps the reIay brought second hand by a well known quattro ebay seller might be at fault - nipped along the road to gsf, £26 later and hey presto it worked. So basically the original relay was dodgy, I replaced it with what I thought was a working relay, when in fact it was also shagged. D'OH!! Oh well that teaches me a lesson, just buy new when it comes to these kind of things.

Thanks to everyone for their tips

Cold start likely. To be fair you can try unplugging the injector (blue plug on inlet) and leave it off to see if it improves it as only really needed when temps drop below 4deg or so

I had the same problem it ended up being the fuel pump relay to it got bad enough that when i would slow down or come to a stop it would die. but I ended up getting 2 of them keeping one in the glove box just in case.
