Default Home invasion. 3am

So, crime has come to my house.
At approximately 3 am this morning a man came into our home, started taking stuff from the basement, then opened the inner door to the first floor. My girl saw movement and screamed, Get out! I bolted up in my skivies and grabbed a bat.

He ghosted.
However, he left some of my tools on the corner of the property.
Somehow, he got away with my Craftsman chop saw.

Police arrived enmasse and collared a "vagrant" up the road a few minutes later but he had nothing from inside the house on him, and we were unable to make a positive ID. So he walked. All this despite a prior record of arrest for theft.

They printed the tools, but he had gloves.

Let this be a warning to all my friends out there. Be vigilant.
We had a bunch of workers in the house this past month. They had keys at one point, to get into the basement to do asbestos abatement during the day.

Locks will be changed first thing this morning.

This F*#k has scared my baby, and enraged me.
I am not to be triffled with, in or out my castle.

Be careful everyone. Be vigilant. This is scarier than, a car break in.

What JJ says, you look 'hard' without a bat in your hand! It would take a brave man to tackle you.

I'm always weary about anyone who comes in to my house, that said, if they got passed the 3 dogs, good luck to them.

The law is far too soft on burglars, and if you whacked him round the ankles, he'd probably end up suing you and getting far too much in compensation.

Put them on a ship and let it sink.

Jeez glad youre all ok Matt, time to get armed perhaps.

In one respect you stateside guyshave it better in you can legally defend yourself with deadly force, in this country its "reasonable" force only, just one issue with that, can someone explain what reasonable is at 3 am when youre scared half out your wits and have no idea of the threat?

A number of years ago when kid bro used to live here, he often used to sleep downstairs and as a consequence, in the summer he would have the little top window open to get a breeze going.
Lying there in the dark one night he noticed a shadow move across the window and a hand then came in tru the top and tried to unlatch the remainder of the catches.
As a car came up the street the hand disappeared and the guy hid round the corner out of sight, so kid bro got up and waited in the dark with a maglite, you know the big long one?
Well, mr burglar reappeared and snuck across the window again but as he was reaching up to put his hand thru the top again it meant his head was almost touching the glass.
Thats when the window went out with the end of the maglite and hit the bastard square in the face knocking him onto the lawn.
Unfortunately he managed to get up and get going before the rest of us could nail the prick, lucky for him, but ill bet he had a nice faceful of glass and bruises the next day.
Pity it wasnt a shotgun.

Get yourself secured fella and hope it dosent cause you any long term problems.
Tony.

Locks changed.
Still tweeked though.
The veneer of civility that I keep for society in general is mighty thin at this point.

Default Vigilance

Unfortunate this should happen to you Matt, together with a female being involved as well. hope it does'nt impair your propensity for civility as indicated by your many past posts.

I live in the sticks but a few months ago my 85 Coupe (both year and type) was stolen from outside the house, so I can endorse your call for vigilance and to be aware of potential threats.

Hope this episode has'nt left you too deflated.

Thanks everyone.

Disheartened. Angry. Needing some rule of law, and human decency, rather than this...
