Default I've become a general Audi Guru in my sleep!

Last week, I could sleep soundly in my bed without the pressure of peoples expectations weighing down my dreams. Not so now.......

Yesterday, I got an e-mail (to my personal e-address) from someone I don't know asking for help about how to fix a speedo / rev counter problem in an Audi Coupe 2.3E (1991)......

Ten minutes ago, I get a PM via the S2 forum (which I haven't been on for a year or so) from someone else I don't know and who has an S2 that he needs help with. He says he is local to me and would like to bring his car to me for help.......... if that's ok with me!

Despite the fact that sometimes I can display a prickly persona (alcohol level dependant), I can often be very helpful to people I don't know for no particular reason. That said, I'm not aware of a website (or other advertising medium) which tells people to give me a shout or to come and visit for (non-'ur') Audi help.

What's happened when I've been asleep?

Wait until they get shirty with you for not answering quickly enough, even though you're doing it for nothing and none of the other established "Audi specialists" ever answers a single question.

I know what you mean Phil but the point is, I'm not doing 'IT' at all. Why would anyone be assuming that I know anything about a car I've never even owned, let alone two strangers within 24hrs?

OK, I bought an S2 once and drove it home but it was (still is) a mechanical ABY donor for the rally car and I've certainly never been an 'enthusiast' for the later style coupe.

Perhaps I'm being a bit naive here. What could they be phishing for?

The private e-mail came from someone who had a name and (Scottish) location. The S2 PM came from someone with 2 post counts and he suggested that he had simply picked my name from a list of those in Aberdeenshire in the hope that I might help.

continued dialogue i presume. lock your cars up.

if someone wanted to find iveco calipers they could just look on the net or ask a local factor, that's what i did.

You could try the £80 per hour or part of hour and only at the 'purchasers' address ( so they cannot eyeball your stuff....)
I think the best idea is to ignore all requests, different if you step in on a Forum question with an informed/experience reply.

Just had another PM from the S2 chap and it all seems above board. He's a new S2 owner and looking for some local help. He's given me a name and location and says he's e-mailed a few people from the forum in exactly the same manner.

The other chap could have got my e-mail address from the quattro owners club website as it's freely available there. To be fair, there are a number of people who think that ANY 4wd Audi is catered for by the club so this could give rise to someone contacting their 'local' club rep.

It's all too easy to be naive, but it's probably just as easy to be too cynical these days as well. If we all went down that route then nobody would ever meet new people and the world would be a very insular place.

My cars are usually locked-up and the whole place is covered by a very professional cctv set-up that can see in the dark! That's assuming they get past the dog!!! I'll wait to see what tomorrow brings........
