Most important, how much cash do you have to buy one?

£1000? £2000? 5000?

it don't have to be a tdi but so long as its reliable, does the required mpg all day long, and ideally falls in to the £35 a year tax bracket, it will be ideal.

Cars that spring to mind are

Audi A2 tdi
VW lupo tdi
VW polo tdi
or anything else you have in mind.

I need something soon... like yesterday! lol
Audi A2 TDI everytime.

wow, thanks for all the reply's everyone thought you'd be out partying .
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL BTW!!

Basically , about 2K budget. 2.5 max.

so i guess a cheap car made from 2001 onwards (for tax reasons) & up to about 2005 ~(to keep in budget).

I'm certainly liking the A2, it would be the easiest to love and much less painful to spend on it knowing it was something i actually liked..

but needs must and anything will do as long as its not un reliable and poorly made and expensive to maintain.

Not many A2 TDi's for less than £3500. real world MPG, you can get 60 + mpg but on a daily basis 56 is about the normal. this goes down in the winter if you allow the webasto heater to run which keeps the engine warm. 75 TDi's only have a 34 ltr fuel tank so you are forever filling it up if you do a few miles a week Tax is £30 a year

How many miles is the 1.4tdi engine good for? Is it as good as the 1.9? As i've heard the 1.9 is good for 400k miles

like all things it depends how it's been looked after, mine has done 121,000 miles i have heard of a 180,000 mile one

NB if you look at car with open sky and it's working don't be surprised if it breaks, repair can cost £3,000 !! it nice though, even if it's shut all the time
