Question removing the rear legs on CQ

Right.. need some info please.. and any advice you can give.

I have to get the rear struts/legs off my old type 85 CQ before wed 10th feb. So i can give them to Raymond so he can convert them to coil-overs.

I don't have a manual for the CQ, only for the front wheel drive 2.2 GT.

It seems the rear nut on the end of the hub/shaft is a different size to the front cause the socket i have for the front, doesn't seem to fit the rear!

If some kind soul can post up a list of all the things I will need to take the rear legs off.. I will be most grateful.
Thanks.

Also, a quick guide as to the order of things to remove first/second etc wouldn't be a bad idea too.. If anyone can be bothered.

cheers..
Gaz.

rear nut will be 30mm or 32mm. Think it's 32mm from memory

you need to undo the following items

outer driveshaft nut
remove brake caliper, carrier pads and disc.
undo the bracket for the brake hose / pipe and support the caliper
if possible, undo the bolts for the splash shield and remove (they usually break)
tie rod to subframe nut / bolt
tie rod to strut nut
lower ball joint nut
inner wishbone nut / bolts
remove the wishbone completely
disconnect the ABS sensor in the boot and drop the wire down through the hole
undo the strut top nut
with the strut off the car and on the bench remove the following:

ball joint bolts x2 - careful with these as they are fragile
ABS sensors - again carefully

And have a blow torch handy so you can undo the caliper carriers. Seriously they are real bastards

sounds like this bit could be a problem?.. hope I've got enough spare time to do this... fingers crossed.

Just hope the end result will be worth it.. its costing me enough.

Couple of things also to note

You also have to remove the rear parcel shelf to get at the top of the strut tower to access the strut top nut, this means removing the rear seat back, disconnecting the rear seat belts and then bending the tabs back to lift up the parcel shelf. You will need to disconnect the speaker wires before removing the shelf. You will need an allen key for the top of the strut to stop it turning when trying to undo the nut.

You "may" also need a puller to remove the splined part of drive shaft out from the hub (as they can have locktight on them from the factory...)

Driveshaft nut on mine is 30mm!
Why remove the wishbone completely? The Cq does not (normally) have a rear roll bar so once balljoint is out of the strut you can slacken the wishbone bush bolts and just push the wishbone down out of the way.
Nut in the boot can be a pain, I ended up making my own special socket for it and you'll need a long 7mm Allen key to hold the rod whilst you undo the nut too. You can get the rear struts off in under 45 mins easy once you have the right tools...

Correct tool for struts is VAG3078 (22mm deep socket with a cutout for allen key), I am trying to source one for my 80CL suspension removal. You can use a 22mm SWAN NECK spanner, but when doing it back up again you can't set the correct torque like you could with a socket........

Or buy a 22mm Oxygen sensor open socket

it's much easier to remove the wishbone complete with the ball joint support bracket all in one.

That way the camber setting is not disturbed
