Default B4 TDI engine swap or tune.

Hi guys, as some of ye may already know I'm about to buy back my old 1996 avant tdi B4.
I really need more power and I'm curious as to what people's honest opinions are in regards tuning the 1Z engine or swapping it for something like a pd130 or something similar.
My main goals are, more power and retain similar levels of reliability to the fairly solid 1Z engine.
Also will be looking for someone to take on this job for me 👍

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you can chip a 1z very easily and cheaply,or if you want more a turbo upgrade is straight forward enough

you can also modify a landrover/iveco injector pump and eliminate all the ecu etc (this is called mtdi)

have a look on here http://forums.tdiclub.com/

Keep the 1Z for now, replace the injector tips(for the 5-cylinder ones I think?) and turbo. I looked into this a few years ago, there's a turbo from a later audi/vw/skoda that bolts on.....likely a variable vane type so difference should be noticeable.
I would think a VW forum will yield the info??

The PD isn't a bad engine but modding the 1Z is something you could tackle yourself using basic tools and a nudge now and again from those in the know?

PD engines have huge drawback, their injectors. Keeping 1Z is the best route, especially because that avoids some fitment and loom building issues, however, the biggest drawback - wastegated turbo - cannot be very simply eliminated; it requires ECU swap from EDC11 to EDC15 by soldering on connector for it, at least that's what most do - although I've read that later 1Z ECU's can be flashed with firmware which supports VNT...

I some time ago had a chance to drive with B5q which has tuned AFN engine - for the first time I had a chance to drive a diesel that gave feel of an engine, which wasn't 2.5 V6 with AT. Stock AFN engine with stock VNT15 or whatever turbocharger it has, with bigger nozzles and suitable remap, and dual mass flywheel replaced with ordinary one, as dual mass flywheel wouldn't hold the load - the result - two things that usually don't go together - "elastic" and "diesel" - turbo starts to blow something just a bit above idle speed, although, obviously, it becomes really strong only above 1,5k and torque peaks at around 2k - when peacefully riding around village, as usual, with engine revving in 1-1,5k range, the feeling that ~1,5 tons heavy B5 quattro avant gave was similar to one which makes my mk2 golf with it's 2.0 8v engine. The only drawbacks - due to lack of dual mass flywheel and way increased torque at low revs, when flooring the throttle below 1,5k, whole interior makes unpleasant buzzing sound - and, some smoke, although not in amounts that would be visible in mirrors.

Already told you our AJM 115pd unit is available. They're very tunable and [i]ultra reliable,/I]Google it and even more so coming from us as it's been looked after! You can't say that about the 1Z unit which is expensive and a right pain in the neck to keep running properly. Reliable engine for sure just not the fueling/metering side!
