No, but I keep kicking the idea round. Main problem I can see is finding a 4wd gearbox with suitable ratios?

You'd need 4WD to handle that torque....

Finding the right gearbox would be my concern also. But then the later boxes had a dual bolt pattern bellhousing so you might be able to use an A4 tdi quattro box or so.
Edit: I don't know for sure if all newer boxes have the dual bolt pattern.

I did this to a 80 quattro, fitted a 1.6td from a golf gtd, it originaly had a 1.8 petrol so the gear box fitted. Ran it on veg oil for a few years cos Im a peece loving cheep skate hippy type

As far a gear ratio goes it was great for towing and maxed out at 105mph so not too bad

I was going to do a similar covertion with a 2.2 coupe and fit the 2.5td engine from a vw transporter.
The lazy solution would be fit massive tyres to componsate for the higher gear ratio.

Was about to say the same, much better option, especially if its the 140BHP 5 CYLINDER and use the 6 speed from it too...

Or just a 1.9 tdi with bigger injectors and a remap for 140bhp.

Can you get 140 from a 90bhp 1z easily? Guessing .216 nozzles, tuning box, EGR delete and a map?
