Unhappy Urgent help needed please!

Hello,

I just realized about my old Coupe Quattro which I bought nearly two years ago, that it's not been SORN'ed since I bought it, and I have never received any reminders either! Now, I entered details online and it says:

"Previous Tax Disc or SORN declaration expired on: 01 07 2002
It is an offence to be the registered keeper of a vehicle that is unlicensed and does not have SORN declared. You can declare SORN from today's date, however, please note the above offence still applies. DVLA's Continuous Registration Enforcement Centre may be in contact with the registered keeper regarding this gap in licensing. "

Previous owner had it for just over a year. What should now then..??? Will I get penalty?
Maybe one of you guys had a same situation? I'm really worried now

Just sorn it online.

That should be the end of it, speaking from experience of a personal blunder

If it doesn't write them a nice letter explaining how you sent them sorn documentation through the post, which I am going to assume you did, and difficult to disprove if posted standard mail, and as they did not contact with anything to the contrary you assumed the sorn declaration was successful. They would of course have contacted you if that was not the case.

Ultimately it is your responsibility as the registered keeper.

The previous owner sent the docs off, not sure if he declared it as SORN.. Never received reminders, that's probably why I never thought about it..

When you buy a car, the vendor splits the V5C and you send of the main bit with your details and the vendor sends the notification that he has sold it and thus ends his liability. That way you receive the new V5C and the subsequent VED reminders and you then have chance to SORN.
It's very risky if you let him do it, good luck

The new keeper has to declare SORN, it makes no difference if the previous owner had done so.

what he says.

Ultimately, it's your responsibility.

One way out of it. Put it in someone else's name. Send off the log book and then when it comes back, SORN it straight away!

Is that "the way round it"? Looks like the only option for me..

I usually just keep section 10 off the V5 when I buy the car, seller sends the main bit off to DVLA to update it. That's how it says section 12 on the V5..?

Yes, but when you buy the car, you become the registered keeper and have to declare sorn, even if it was already sorn, its like you have to declare your intentions with the car.

Try sorning it online, it has worked for me in the past when I forgot.

Or other option as above, I beleive you would still be liable for the undeclared status whilst in your possession though. I have no idea if they would follow it though.

given how shit the DVLA generally are, then it'll probably never get pursued as it'll cost them too much in time and money for what it is.

That said, being a government department, they probably would then!!
