Question Type 85, Rain water leaks.

I have rain water leaks into both front and rear offside footwells. I have just read quattrokid's thread, dated 02.11.09, and noted the comment on door seals and door membranes.

As far as the seal goes, I can see no obvious damage, but I did recenrly adjust the door locking stop so that the door closed easier, (previously door had to be hard slammed to close). Maybe this acton has made water ingress easier, though I believe it leaked prior to this action. Will have to check, was it tight for a reason?

Regarding the door membrane, this is missing alltogether, having been removed by a previous owner for whatever reason. Are these still available, and where could I get one.
All comments appreciated.

A classics mag recently did a feature on replacing electric window regulators.
To replace the membrane they suggested that clear sticky back plastic blue Peter use! Good idea, n can be bought on big rolls to do both doors
If u have a sunroof check the drain holes are clear of rubbish- old speedo cable pushed down their n blast from a hosepipe works wonders

IIRC, the sunroof drains on theese can clog up causing this, that in turn causes water to run inside the pillar then in to footwell.

Also check the section under the bonnet behind the bulkhead upright, there is a rubber grommet there that can get clogged up, this is the drain for that section, i can't remember it's exact location on theese but if it is the case you will see water sitting there or at the least you will see tidemarks for lack of a better work where the water has been sitting.

All worth checking out, maybe someone else can remind us where the drain hole is

No sunroof i'm afraid, but clear sticky back plastic idea may be the best soloution for the door membrane replacement.,

Will check grommet under the bonnet as the drain for this area and check with a hosepipe.

Car was left overnight with the offside to the prevailing wind and overnight rain, so no car
movement occurred, yet the rear offside footwell had half an inch of water.
Front footwell was getting wet prior to this, (will check under bonnet, as above, for this).
As water cannot flow between the front and rear footwells then, my thinking is that water can only have come in through an inadequate door seal or through the non existent membrane. Can anyone see a flaw in this argument.

Is car on level ground? If not may be leaking at front n draining to back. Happened on a gt I had
Has it an alarm ?
My current gt has been leaking in driver side
Two screws for alarm go straight over driver glove box, runs down n onto carpet.
Rear light putty stuff stopped the leak
Has yours the grommets at the front of the rear inner arch? Take rear door card equivalent off n see if it's leaking their, should be rust stained if so
Just a thought

Had this problem and tried everything as mentioned above. Even ran hose under the bonnet and could not find it. Rubber grommet was the culprit in the end. Running water over it a speed kept the water out, but a slower trickle and the car would fill up - front forst then the rear passenger side! Put a load of sticky gum on and around it and problem solved.

What is the plastic roll you mention to replace the membrane?

Update:
No alarm fitted and car was on level ground. Drivers foot well was getting wet anyway so will pay attention to the sloping panel beneath the pedals and everything above it, including the glove box.

Jogi750, exactly where is the grommet you mention located?

Clear sticky back plastic on a roll, to be used as a membrane, first mentioned by audicoupeparts. It being the type used on the childrens programme Blue Peter (see above). Perhaps he can give us the source.

Many thanks for your help .

Thinking about it, the item was more of a bung than a grommit.
No clear picture and can't exactly remember but this is the best I can do (pic showing old T34 engine) - somewhere in this area and it allowed some wiring to enter the car if my memory serves me correctly
