Lot of discussion on the S2 forum on the recent MOT changes.
The one that worries me and a lot of others on here is this one: 6.1.9 Engine performance: (a) Control unit illegal modified. (b) Illegal engine modification. It's all getting completely nuts thanks to barmy EU. ![]() ![]()

How will a mot know if the ecu has been chipped? Are they going to plug a diagnostics in on every car?

and what do they class as illegal modifications?
Surely a lot of modifications are not illegal else it could put a lot of tuning companies out of business. and man has been modifying the combustion engine since the day it was developed. At what point do they draw the line and say, nope, that's illegal? Is using fi instead of carbs illegal? Stand alone ecu's? throttle bodies? bike carbs? electric fuel pumps? |

Completly different engine from original like mine is how I read it. Having tuned standard engine that looks standard is not an issue. Guess I'll find out in May.

Its about time we all told the EU to FO!
The eu is a totalitarian/authoritarian, unaccountable bloc comprised of anti freedom bearueaucrats. I never was consulted on any of what goes on in their world, were you? Nope, yet they presume to claim higher authority than our elected representatives. I say F*ck the EU. I dont bow to an organisation that has no authority over me, i dont even recognize it as having any legitimacy at all and the sooner others start to wake up and see it for what it is- The death of freedom, the better off we'll all be out of it. |

I suspect this is for new cars only?
In the USA there is Inspection Maintainence check that is basically a check of any error codes and to make sure the ECU has the same program as it left the factory: I think this "MOT" is down to 90 secs or so! But yes - not allowing aftermarket tuners to mess with the ECU is one of the ideas - trying to keep all the emission control stuff working. Think that's why some of the tuner companies offer a dongle to copy your original map and download it again (for the MOT)? |

I would imagine that is more for the likes of the chavs running about in 1.0/1.2 corsa's etc with 2liter gsi engnes etc fitted without the appropriate brakes suspension etc to compensate for the hike in both weight and power. (DVLA and insurance not informed) Not so long ago here a young twat in a car like this lost control on a straight part of a duel carageway here, spun accross a grass reservation, another side of the road, through a fence and bounced off a treeall this while just missing other drivers.
When the car was recovered it was found to have a max of 2 coils per spring held in place with cable ties. I would have thought any car with an engine conversion (with engineers report) would be fine. |

and well chipped engines are often more economical i.e. less emmissions, than what comes out of the factory.
Like Dave says, more like the possibilty that no engine swaps allowed ?? |
