Replacing tappets

I have some really noisy tappet(s) and i would like the noise gone.

Spoke to 2 people today about this issue:

1 guy who had the problem on a 2.3 5cyl got quotes and said that its not worth doing as it cost so much and whats involved in massive ?????

The other guy who is a mechanic (neighbour) said its not that bad, do the cambelt kit, aux belts and water pump same time and will cost £450 + parts

Does the cam need replacing?

Not sure what to believe now and the answers are complete opposite.

Anyone able to explain on this for me please

Certainly do the belts at the same time, but the camshaft itself should be fine.

Cam,probally doesn't need replacing?If it does,new they are afew bob.
You have to take the cam belt off,to do the tappets.So if your belt is old,this would be agood time to do it and while everythings apart do the water pump.These are cheapish and would save you taking everything apart,at a later date.
I can see where your mates coming from,but you mightn't need all the parts replacing or have the cash to do it?
If your tappets are noisey already,you could try an engine flush.(Oil filter and new oil)
This may,cure it???
Sometimes a flush can make your tappets noisey,but yours are noisey already and could clean them?(Nothing to lose)

The more experienced mechanics,will probally be able to add to this?

Looking at around 170 ish quid for the parts to do this job, nowhere near 450.

If youre even a little handy with the spanners, just familiarise yourself with the engine setup in one of the haynes manuals for your car and have a crack at it yourself.

In order to change the tappets, the cam has to be removed, which means the belt needs to come off, the cam cover obviously and the cam caps.
Shouldnt really take more than a couple of hours to do it even if dragging your feet.

Cam if worn would need replacing but only if its worn and they generally last a heck of a long time.

Its a simple to do if you are mechanically minded can knock it off in about 4-6hrs including timing belt aux belt and water pump, Cams will be fine there not like modern audi's (made in chocolate) audi engine's of our era wear really well if they have been serviced regular

Just set up the timing remove cam belt whip off cam cover undo the camshaft caps make sure you undo them in set sequence lift out the cams whip out the tappets put the new one's in stick the cams back in making sure you have lined them up correctly slap the cam caps back on torque them up cam cover back on job done

ok so it doesnt sound like that much of a major job for a good mechanic.

Im good with brakes/exhaust and little things but im not confident enough to attempt this job.

Id much rather pay a pro to do the job

Should i buy my tappets from GSF/ECP or is there a better place.

Needed to change mine on the GT (2.2 KV) and as I was intending changing the engine at a later date got some cheap lifters from e-bay. That was 3000 miles ago and still rattle free.

Cost £30 and 2 hours work (didn't change cam belt).
