![]() Hi there;
As the title reads really, I sometimes find it hard to select gears, ie. the gear stick becomes difficult to move into gear, almost like a notch stops it. I have noticed it more recently, since I have been travelling in traffic more. It seems to be when the car has either been run fast, or has been stood in traffic and got warmer. Its most prominant when coming to a stop and selecting first, or trying to select second when you dont have to stop! The only other thing to note is when the car first starts and runs from cold, when you select 2nd, you get what I think best to term, a 'coggy' feel as you change up. I guess the two are linked, any idea's what could be causing it? Any help is appreciated, its not so much a problem, but an annoyance, and it makes me look a tit when I take a little extra time at a junction! Many thanks a ever! Sie! ![]() |

![]() not sure how you check the level to be honest but could be worth topping it up to see if it makes a difference.

![]() Is it just as bad if you turn the engine off ? or does it go into gear easily ?

Need a big allen key to undo oil drain plug. THink there is a oil filler cap too. Need to crawl round under the car. I think you check it with a bit of wire bent, that you put in the filler hole. Sorry to be vague, read the Haynes, it tells you. Also, I stuck in some Molyslip gearbox additive, it made it a bit better (mine used to stick in gear after a long run). Steve |

![]() Lift the car up and check the linkage that comes away from the gear stick to the gearbox, there are bolts that maintain the rigidity of the linkage... Check these...
Early cars, like yours and my old GT (and the CQ's/Ur's) can work these loose, this makes 1st and 2nd hard (if not impossible) to engage as you can't generate enough 'left' movement on the 'box selector to engage the corresponding 'cog' at the 'box. The cars also suffer if 'dragging through piled snow'... This can (and have experienced this)... Temporarily 'freeze' the linkage into the selected gear.

![]() Yeah I think it is the same when the engine is off, its sometimes difficult to select first when parking up, and reverse for that matter.

![]() Try putting synthetic oil in the gearbox (filler plug is next to the N/S drive shaft from memory) ..........make sure you can get the filler out before you drain the oil

![]() THIS IS A MUST, if yiu drain the oil and you cant get the fill plug out, you are fooked big time' the drain plug is normanly quite easy to move as it s alway has a little bit of oil sepage around the thread but the fill plug has been sat there for the last 20 odd years bone dry and will have corroded to the box, its worth spraying with Plus gas for a few days before so it can get into the threads
