Back in the 1960s, Burroughs Corp tried to use a high level language as their systems programming language. ALGOL was a favourite, so they cloned it and added their own extensions to make 'The Only lOgical Language' -- or TOOL.

Various people around the office were trained on this and became known as TOOL programmers. Or, for short, just TOOLs.

The Burroughs people, of course, were American and didn't at first appreciate why this caused so much mirth.

Many years later, the vast majority of the members of what we now refer to as civilisation are everyday affected by people totally embedded in the computer world, that the word 'tool' really is now a rather expansive collective noun.
