I'm thinking of having a look at one locally to me, not sure of the mileage but it's a metallic green estate, definitely and R and has all the toys. Looks tidy enough and it's going for the right money. Loads of room for sweets. Anyone any info on these bruisers, not sure if they are 250bhp or 280bhp. but one thing, I know they are a five cylinder turbo!!

250bhp out the box although the police modifieds kick some serious butt-3rd gear wheelspin in an auto......
![]() I used to work on Volvo and had the engine out of one of these for an oil leak, very well built and seem to have good reliability- dont remember one ever being towed in. If its a good un id have few worries about having one. ![]() |

Here is my conundrum. Car is on a P plate, everything works, eleccy / heated seats, sunroof, mirrors, computer, climate. The suede leather is immaculate. It's had 4 x new tyres, Alloys are immaculate with no oxidation. No rust the metallic green paint is in good order, bar a good polish, just some stone chips and the front chin spoiler has some cracks ( very very low ). The engine ( 5cyl 20v turbo ) sounds sweet as a nut and it has had a new turbo and had all the pipes / hoses and breathers replaced 5k miles ago. It goes like stink and grips like sh*t to a blanket. BUT.... the mileage is 207k and that is the bit I cannot get my head around. It has full Volvo history to 170k and it seems, looking at the paperwork it has wanted for nowt. It is dirt cheap and I mean dirt cheap. Come on guys help me out on this what do I do. I cannot seem to get my thinking around 207k!! Heeellllpppp!

Hi Booty,
If it is really that cheap, just think of what else you might get for the money...... Nothing appealing?.... then go for it! Petrol car prices (especially bigger/turbo engined cars) are in freefall at the moment, so take advantage if you can. I watched Quentin Wilson (ex Top Gear?) t'other night talking about 4x4 prices dropping £600 ....... PER MONTH! I am not afraid of indicated mileage; both of my 200s had "reasonable" mileages showing when bought, but having been inside the instruments of both, they have evidently been tampered with...... the saloon on at least three different occasions! My Avant is still showing 240.000 miles, and is OK...... I guess it has done much more; Service history stated it had done over 90.000 in the first three years.I bought it almost a decade later with allegedly 120,000 on it........ I suspect MUCH more! My Astra van for work covered 360.000 miles in eight years, and only got parked 'cos it was hit in the side....... If it looks OK and drives OK, it probably IS ok. AlanB |

Hi Guys,
Just while the 850R is under discussion, does anyone know much about the history of this engine? I know that Volvo used the 5-cyl turbo diesel Audi engine for a while, and I have been told (possibly read it in PPC?) that some of the Volvo gearboxes share the Audi bolt pattern and can be used to fit Audi engines in a front engine/rear drive configuration. Does this mean that there is likely to be some overlap between this 5-cyl 20v Turbo engine and something a little closer to home? ![]() If so, I bet they are cheaper than S2 engines! AlanB |

Usernames lee or dragon (Gary) on www.volvo-480-europe.org may well give you some really helpful advice.
Thats a top forum with some owners now going for the 850 cars. Theres always Simon Linton who takes care of the 800/V70 series cars on www.volvoclub.org.uk Simons really helpful. Steve ![]()
