Gearbox oil
Morning all,
I think I have this correct… is the below the correct gearbox oil for the B2 80? Haynes lists SAE80 hypoid oil, from my readings I believe it’s 80w/90 GL4 I need as opposed to anything listed as GL5? https://www.halfords.com/motoring/en...1l-724443.html As always, andy guidance appreciated! Simon |

Yes, stick with GL4 as GL5 has a high sulphur content which attacks brass synchros.
The genuine Audi Oil is only £10 a ltr. From TPS or your friendly Audi dealer. Alternatively, the castol stuff is very good. |

Think I’ll give my local Audi dealer a miss…. Last time I went the guy didn’t recognize any part number I gave and told me all Audi models start with an ‘A’! |

Managed to get this done this morning, must say it would have been so much easier had I been able to get the car on a lift!
Went with the suggestion of Castrol instead of the Halfords stuff, had to wait a couple of days for delivery due to the weekend, but I must say for a first order Opie Oils gave me great service and I would recommend. Not sure how long the old stuff had been in the box, still looked a reasonable-ish colour, but absolutely stank when I drained it. I know for a fact it’s been in there at least the last 15 years, I’m just wondering if it’s ever been changed in the last 36 years, the drain/fill plugs look like they have never been touched. The vehicle has always suffered with a slight second gear crunch, I’ve lived with it as it’s not really an issue if you think and change gear sensibly, but the fluid change on first experience really seems to have helped the issue. |
