Unlocking & Door Card removal advice (B4 Coupe)
Here's the scenario:
1996 B4 Coupe Neither key I have has worked the lock in the passenger door since I bought it. The central locking worked both doors until recently (from the drivers door lock), however, the central locking unit packed up recently so that was removed until I got round to sourcing a replacement. After that, to open the passenger door when locked, I operated the interior handle, up popped the little lock button halfway, and I'd pull it up fully, then the door was ok to open. Today, I pulled the interior handle to let my lass in, but nothing! I'm guessing that maybe there is a rod which has disconnected or something. After some advice about what will be the probable problem, and whether it'll be a ball-ache taking the door card off if the door isn't operational ie is it possible to access the door card securing screws with the door shut? Cheers.

Thanks for the links, problem is I need the door open to access some of the screws to get the card off!

Opening locked and jammed door without door card removal
I was faced with the same issue on a 1993 Audi 80 B4. Driver's door lock had jammed in locked position. Not possible to remove the door card without damaging it, when the door is shut!
Multiple discussions with auto-locksmiths were all along the lines of "We don't do old mechanical stuff nowadays! Rip the door card out." I found that if I opened the rear door on the drivers side, I could see, and get a hacksaw blade onto, the striker pin. It would have been a long job to saw through it by hand but after much taping around the area to prevent paint damage, a cheap electric reciprocating saw from B&Q made short work of it. With the door open, I was able to remove the lock and found that the original problem was caused by a broken spring in the lock itself, so in my case, getting the door card out would still not have got me the door open anyway. Striker pins are readily available and it was easy to source a replacement but I'd make sure you have the replacement in hand before you proceed. Last edited by RichardV; 01-08-21 at 01:36 PM. |

Brilliant thinking.
Many people will not understand that your solution accomplished everything easier and cheaper than a new door card or punching out the door lock. Nice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When you say ‘central locking unit’ do you mean the pump? If so can you not introduce air to the pipe that exits the pump to operate the system - or is it more broke than that.

I cannot answer for a b3/b4, but for the B2 the drivers side door had no vacuum. It just operates from the key. I added a vacuum setup to my B2 ur so it would work from a remote alarm. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Imitating the central locking pump is also a good plan!
