did the car actually stop due to fuel starvation - if so you will probably have damaged the impellor, as fuel is used to lubricate it - had the same with my KV many years ago.

As for the O ring - I doubt you will be able to buy it on its own, however there are repair kits which contain all the seals and rings etc to overhaul metering heads - that would be your best bet -available on ebay etc - unless you know the EXACT size of the O ring you need.

OK fitted a new pump 'just in case' its the third pump now and the issue stays the same no/low pressure at metering head but high at fuel filter just 12 inches away!?
I'm going to run a pump from a can and by pass the tank.
Does anyone have pictures of how the return line fits into the tank?
Cheers

This is odd - You have an 'in tank' pump - an accumulator and a filter ( near the metering head)

I would check fuel rate flow at pump output then accumulator out put then at filter output - its possible you have a build up of cak in your pipes which is restricting flow and so restricting pressure.

Have a look at the diagram below -

Thanks Mark for the rply
Agreeddddddddddddddd
I've replaced the lines under the car the fuel accumulator and the fuel filter (3 times).
I wonder if it was a vacuum issue so removed the fuel cap...no change.
Anyway if I do it the way I said and it works I'll trace everything back and remove it just not today as its boiling!!

Simon, I'm going to apologise in advance for this......
Sorry, BUT just check you have the fuel lines the right way around - i.e. feed and return - I know its unlikely but it has been done.
Sorry for even mentioning it - but sometimes its the simple / stupid stuff that gets us!!!

Hi Mark
Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went out first thing and checked the flow, 0 Zero!
Turns out that I connected the flow and return wrong at the front wheel end wrong way round as you just suggested!
I want to thank you in particular and everyone else for there input
Its ticking over but wont rev, I think I need to remove a washer on the return value to reduce pressure in the system.
For now I'm dead chuffed its running again.
I'll set it up tomorrow all being well and then book it for its first MOT in 9 years!
Thanks again
Simon

Now that was an easy one

I'd like to chime in as well having problems with my KV engined 90 quattro type 85, a bit like my coupe quattro years ago.
I'm having issues with starting the car, on totally cold starts the problem is the least, but every other start during the day, especially when being stood for an hour or so, it is very difficult to get it up and running as it's flooding the engine while starting. At least that is what I assume since it smells of unburned fuel very badly at that time.

While driving on part throttle it has small hick ups constantly, except when doing 120 km/h (90 mp/h ?) on the highway (luckily!)

Only checked the following so far:
- engine timing
- Co emission

What could be the main cause for the starting issue?

Car did well on the Ring last weekend but that was WOT mostly

Check state of plugs and rotor arm and inside of dizzy cap.

Whats the age of your fuel filters and accumulator?

There is a pre filter straight out of the tank and then an accumulator and then the pump - there is a small bolt head on one end of the accumulator, try CAREFULLY undoing it - if fuel comes out its goosed and needs changing.
Ideally need to check emissions first - if you cant check CO then turn the mixture screw 1/4 turn anticlockwise and see if it makes any difference - if not turn it back to where you started and then turn it 1/4 turn clockwise - if no difference start again and go 1/2 turn either way. Always go back to where you started.
next thing I would suggest is checking fuel system flow rate and then system pressure and control pressure.

It was now its fixed!!! LOL
As Mark is suggesting could be a misfire.
The fuel accumulator 'stores' pressure for hot or cold starts so worst case you have to crank it longer.
Unplug cold start and see how it runs.
Does the KV 90 have the little allen key near the fuel pipes on the metering head? If so maybe one injectors is 'dripping' fuel into the pot.
The pressure in the accumulator would push fuel through that injector, flooding just one pot, thus rich smell and low pressure for the other 4 injectors until its running.
Remove the plugs and turn it over on the crank bolt and see if you can see any 'wet' on TDC on each pot.
It might be worth removing all the injectors, bridge pump relay and check they all pump out the same amount of fuel, these injectors do wear you could also replace the 'O' rings on them.
Hope that's some help.
Let us know how you get on.
