That is a good option, a well sorted S2 Avant could have the RS power upgrade and be purchased for a little over half the price of the RS2.
They are also becoming rarer so are already starting to climb the pricing ladder. You mentioned the Defender.... Mary and I use both a 90 and a 110 as a daily. They have no power performance at all but for a practical aspect of me jumping in and out in dirty overalls and Mary jumping in and out covered in horsesh1t at the end of the week they can be jet washed inside and out without any worry. Also can be used for towing 3.5 ton, good in any weather, parts are a tenth the price of Audi parts.

the reason I didn't follow the herd down the rs2 route was that as a true daily it's going to suffer wear and tear, and knowing Audi, it wont be long before you cant even get the basic service parts for it.
The rs4s got a few more years grace before the inevitable happens. ![]() |

I've been looking for a B6 1.8tq avant for ages, S line's are nearly B5 RS4 money so I started researching those instead but the potential costs can be huge, RS2's aren't cheap to run but they're cheaper than an RS4.

The Defender would be an 'extra' car as such. At the moment, we have a Suzuki Grand Vitara for doing the shit work. No good for towing but the Passat makes up for that being the 2.8 V6 model and the Suzuki was cheap and does what we need it to for now. Although I'd prefer a Lada Niva Cossack!! |

The only thing is with these S2 / Rs2 its very hard to find a straight one that hasnt been thrashed to death,
and you need one as most of you will agree that hasnt been heavily modified because you dont want it to be always breaking down/giving problems etc. Agree with tonks that more are getting broken. I bought ours because its fun, cool, rare and when i come to sell it ill get what i paid for it. Bonus anycar you buy maintenance costs dont count |

Absolute no brainer though I do love the RS4, the RS2 is an icon and the start of proper fast estate cars. Shame I can only justify a 3.0tdi even if it is a Quattro............................. just waiting to win the lottery to buy one of each.
