Only one got my first set of winters this ear and they make a huge difference, I researched and ended up with Ultra Grip 8s and don't regret it for a second

I wonder if our govt will ever make fitting winter tyres mandatory as it is with some of our European neighbours ?

I wouldn't say that is necessary, mainly because if a car is garaged over winter the last thing you want is to be forced to fit winter tyres to it even though its not used. What would be a better idea, is insurance companies offering discounts to clients who prove they have fitted winter tyres on their cars.

In Italy it's compulsory if you drive on the motorways so no probs if your car is parked up but yes I agree a discount on insurance would be nice if you prove you have winter tyres fitted.

Should also mention that my winter tyres go down in size from 245/40/18 (that are far too wide on ice and snow) to 215/50/17 and worked brilliantly in comparison to wide Summer tyres during the one day of snow we had this year. At least double the traction that I got with the Summer tyres when I got caught out 2 years ago...

Cheapo's on the old B2 80 175/13's, canny even remember the brand but they work and firestones on the wifes touran, massive difference to the pirelli P7's for summer and still P-zero's on the A6Q no need for winters

For me it's cheep 185's(down from 205).........Goodrides I think.
My wife has a couple of cheepo's on her Honda and they're also very good........they're on a set of spare rims so they get put on for a few months each winter.......four winters use and expect to get another four out of them.

What does "not that expensive" means? Nokian is one of the best winter tyre manufacturers and because of that, their tyres are among the most expensive - unless you're buying old stuff like previous model haakapeliita's.

You better be happy that UK insurance mafia doesn't put additional price for NOT using winter tyres - after all, owner should put suitable tyres on the car, so it's logical there's winter or all season tyres on car in winter. Haven't been in London in winter, but was in Perterborough, and saw real need for winter tyres there.

Put winter tyres on that A6 and you will come to similar conclusion than pimpdriver Steve - that winter tyres provides better traction than quattro, so it's possible to drive without quattro. Had to drive with my A90q in winter with summer tyres for a couple of days, because winter started while I had taken car apart - felt better than mother's golf with winter tyres but still sucked, especially the need to release throttle in every curve in order to keep control.

I read the reports in the interest as stated before, we've all got preferences for different reasons.
And so I bought a Range Rover.
