Used an RS2 as a daily before (well Alex did) for about 3 years and the overall running costs apart from the annual service were very little, given the annual mileage is about 8k.

The crux of it is, I bought the A6 Avant 1.9 TDI Sport about 6 months ago and it bores me rigid to drive. I drove the Ginetta to work today and the 100 Sport home and both of them were infinitely more fun.
Can't grumble at the A6, it does everything I need it to, has some power (remapped to 174bhp) and is comfy, but lacks soul and that's not what driving should be about for me at least.
The downside is where we have moved to is proper country so the cars do get proper filthy. N/S of the A6 is nearly brown from front to rear including glass, so having a tidy number to keep polishing every day is totally pointless and chucking logs and hay in the back also means the interior gets abused a bit, although I do vacuum the car a lot as I hate a dirty inside!!

Practically speaking, I should get a decent 4 x 4 load lugger, and have looked at Defender (90's and 110's) but it's not really me and the RS2 was everything a car should be and the only car I really miss.

The A6 is tiptronic so not the most economical and I tend to drive it a bit spirited (as spirited as you can get in an auto diesel!) so I get high 30's.
An RS2/RS4 would get me low to mid 20's and give the cost of diesel compare to petrol, it probably works out about 5mpg more driving the diesel so not much of a greater saving at the end of the day.

Just buy it, and use it, it'll get filthy, so what!... Turn the hose on it once a week and just spend a little money on it each year staying on top of cleaning out the underside and repairing any stonechips/rustproofing etc... They're tough old birds.

Which makes me think why not just run a nicely looked after S2 avant like yours. OK, its not the RS, but less outlay and probably just as much fun and I could probably get a decent one from the sale of the A6 (especially as she's got a new set of winter tyres!)

Tis true, there's some great enthusiast S2's out there which are close to RS2 spec, JJ had one. At the end of the day Al, it's an estate car, it's got to get dirty, and it's got to go down the dump with rubble in it, or the vets with the dog in it... There's no point getting stressed about dirt, they'll clean up again... Now, if you buy an RS4 with it's huge, blingo-bendy Alloys, you won't even get down the lane, let alone use it daily.

RS2 if it were up to me. But the newer one if it's the "trouble and strife's" choice.

RS2.

B4 is a lot more roomy in the back than a B5......
