It will be the front wheel bearing. More noise when you steer one way and disappears the other is a dead giveaway

Hi Stevel, when up on lift yesterday there was zero play in the wheel? Could this still be the bearing?

It will be the wheel bearing when you turn say left the the N/S bearing is unloaded the O/S is loaded turn the other way and it's the oppisite thats why it's only noisey when you turn one way. So, noise when you turn left = O/S/F wheel bearing worn they don't have to have play in them to be noisey

Just to add to what Steve's said;

If the cars on the ramp, wheels free, spin them up by hand and use a long screwdriver to contact the rear of the hub, using it like a stethoscope.
Youll be surprised how well this works o pick up noisy bearings as theyre generally quiet until they start to deteriorate when they get very noisy very quickly.
Some of them youll easily hear just by listening carefully and spinning the wheel up by hand.

I have been asked to point out that Jaytee is not my missus (rather my girlfriend) and therefore any droning noise is not attributal to her. I should also state for the record that my "soon to be ex" wife did go out in the car for a quick 5 minute blast and the droning sound was considerably noticeable.

Apologies to all concerned who may have been effected, traumatised or otherwise confused by my state of affairs and inane postings

yeah right

Absolutely. The noise is as the bearing faces break up, and when you turn it increases the pressure on inner or outer race depending which lock. Hence the noise increases one way, decreases the other. Don't wait for the play to appear - get it changed. I speak from experience on this one, and I had no play either.

Several years ago my S2 had a rear bearing go on it, in the length of time it took me to drive from Derby to Home, on a snowy day. It'd gone from a distant drone to sounding like a milk float. I think once they start going, they can either take 1000's of miles or can fail pretty catastrophically. It just depends what mood it's in.
