I'd be removing a spark plug and seeing if there's oil on the plugs. If there is a bit of oil might be the rings are in poor condition

that's interesting, ian and thanks for that information. the spark plugs have always been in great condition - nice and clean, just this pong from the tailpipe. it doesn't seem to be using any more oil than it should and at last check the car covered 1000 miles from full to low on the dipstick.

Suppose you have to take into account these engines are 20+ years old and are going to smell abit etc

Quick update. Think the engine may be knackered or need a lot of attention.
I took her for an MOT at the weekend, three weeks before it was due to see what may need doing and they abandoned the MOT because of problems with the emissions.
Said there was quite a bit of blue smoke plus the engine was starting to overheat and he didn't want to blow any hoses.
Are there many engines that come up for sale?
