What Mr Spink said, boxes could be trouble waiting to happen, they had chocolate camshafts before then but were sorted around 2004, so you'd have to check out when it was made/when the chocolate camshaft issue was sorted RE the VIN./production date, unless you can maybe work it out from the engine serial number or something. From what I've read they're so thirsty it almost negates one of the main benefits of a diesel, plus the price of diesel you'd almost be better with one of the bigger NA petrol V6s. They rust a bit like no audi 15 years before ever did, then you have normal C5 problems like the weight causes them to eat control arms, broken rear washer pipes which turn either the boot or headliner into a pond etc. I thought jumping from a C3 to a C5 was a great move. Three grand in parts later, I should have bought a C4 2.5 tdi!

Roy,
Nothing wrong with the 2.5TDi in the later cars (03 onwards) as the soft camshaft issue had been sorted and in 04 they came as either 163bhp 2wd or 180 4wd and capable of averaging mid 30's mpg and mega miles so long as cam belts changed at correct intervals (chain drive only came in on the later 2.7 and 3TDi's). As to gearbox, so long as its a normal tiptronic and not the CVT you'll be fine but get the oil in it changed if its gone past 100k and not been done

Might be worth the OP checking what vin they started putting the non chocolate cams in as earlier this year I changed them(and all the rest of the bits) in an 04 allroad tdi which was reg'd in august 04,car had only done 120k with at least 6 years of audi history(which to be honest isn't worth the paper it is written on but thats another story)

Rubbish cars don't buy one!!

Nah, they are very well put together and refined compared to the old ones, really nice inside, just have different problems, like control arms, why the fk they need so many i'll never know. Having said that I get low 30s mpg out of the 2.7t, and petrol is cheaper.... Better with a petrol.
