So where does someone who lives in a bedsit who has to have a car for their job put these wheels & tyres out of season?

Not being able to afford it is a legitimate statement. Even if you did have the room, not many people have another £600 spare for a set of winter tyres (I've looked and winter tyres are massively expensive compared to summer tyres) and then the cost of having them changed over twice yearly (if they're not skilled or able to do it).

Last thing this country needs is MORE legislation, MORE bureaucracy, MORE reasons to get points/fined.

Don't get me wrong, winter tyres are a good idea but many people can't afford them.

They're only pricey now because its winter.

In the continent they have it right, and will store your tyres for you.

Or just fit "all season" tyres such as the Vredestein Quatrac.

While your winter tyres are on your summer tyres are nicely tucked up in the garage.
The "only" extra cost is the initial outlay because the tyres last twice as long, on my S3 I got the garage to change the tyres but this time I bought steel wheels and change the myself. I agree some people haven't got storage room.

our neighbour has a 545i BMW.

he got 9 foot off his drive this morning.

was still there when I got home!

I did actually do the neighbourly thing and helped dig him out and put some salt down (hoping it rusts it away a bit quicker!!). Now back on drive safe. Don't think he'll be going anywhere for a few days! 8" of nice white powder here!
Sledging and snowboarding booked for tomorrow morning down the fields! Happy days!!
