Default NG Starting Help/rescue

Right a slightly odd situation so I will outline in roughly.

Next weekend I will be going to hopefully help bring home a 10v 90q. However the car is not starting/running properly. The car is 120 miles away so I would like to just make one trip, and information in limited.

Car has been running fine and in daily use until this issue (though it had been stood for about a week since it was last run) until the issue developed, unfortunately my dad was ill and had to come home so could not trouble shoot.

First instance; car was hard to start, cranked fine but took a while to fire, once running all ok.

Second instance: car very hard to start, cranked fine but did not fire, engine fired just as ignition switch was released. Engine ran under light load but missfired under any load/throttle.

The car is normally parked uphill at home, but has been parked downhill-where is the fuel pickup in a 90 tank?

So I want to go and get the car to bring it home, and take any common spares that might solve the issue;

Coil
HT leads
Plugs
dizzy
Fuel

Any other suggestions? Water in the fuel? What does the ignition switch do in relation to switching things?

I am not overly familiar with an NG

Fuel pump can be heard BTW.

There's a mk2 golf here with exactly exactly exactly the same symptoms and onset. We're thinking, hall sender in the dizzy or the ignition module on the bulkhead. we've done everything else, just have no spares or new parts to try, yet.

Where is the car?

Check all the earthing points and earth cables to and from engine and the battery.
Ignition switches are fairly cheap incase thats at fault, Make sure its genuine though.

Flat tow?!!!!

Andy, had a bit o' bother with a mate's NG after doing the head gasket and stuff, car had been in bits for about 6/7 months. It seemed to be fueling, cranked it for a while and when we pulled the plugs out they were as good as dry. Unclipped the airbox and worked the flap manually.....a bit of a guddle but did the trick.

Sounds like crappy injectors and/or cracked intake rubber boot.

Btw, knowing usually silly part prices in UK, I'm sure that 120 mile round trip to take a look will be cheaper than buying mentioned parts, especially since half of them have nothing to do with this problem.

Great, thanks for the ideas guys, keep any other suggestions coming!

Its my dads car, he was on holiday and both he and the car took ill so he was unable to fix the car, and had to come home.

Car is in Kintyre, West coast of Scotland.

What does the ignition switch "switch" other than the starter-eg what things could we manually switch or temp hard wire if needed?

MSH-Doh! I forgot how much CIS hates air leaks, will take stuff to try and be able to replaces hoses and seal cracks. I should have remembered that from my 10v 90 , spent a while sorting every leak.

I dont mind fitting plugs etc, a service would not kill it

If the fuel pump primes when you turn on ignition, there's nothing wrong with ignition switch, at least from engine management's point of view.

As for injectors - a chap who I barely know had a problem with his A90 NG - engine was running fine and emissions test was passed ideally, but it was hard to start it - it had to be cranked for 5-10 seconds, if not more. In the end turned out to be injectors.

Changed the lead between the coil and the dizzy and she fired right up and is running spot on! Drove 120 miles home so a successful rescue.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, big thanks to Peter for the loan of the spare parts!
