Default 80 TDi Gear oil leak

Looks like I have a leak from the gearbox on the tdi. It looks like it is coming from the input for the gear linkage which seems a strange place to leak. I didn't think the oil would get up there?

Anyone seen this before and is there a seal which can be replaced here? I take it it's a gearbox out job?

Cheers

With the box out there is a cover on the input flange which houses a seal and a bearing. Easy to change once the box is out. How much is it leaking would you estimate?

Ate you talking about the input shaft of the box? It seems to be leaking from the gear linkage. There's a fair old leak.

Sorry, it was late at night.

I have a housing and a linkage from a 5sp quattro tdi gearbox (A4) if any of that is any good to you.

Well, of course, there should be a seal, why else it should leak oil if there would be nothing to go bad Clean it and check if you want be sure.

Several years ago I changed the corresponding seal on mothers mk3 1.6 golf when I changed clutch release bearing, wasn't hard thing to do, had to use hook made from wire to get it out. I guess on audi it should be similar, despite gearbox is totally different.

Yeah, I'm wondering if this can be done without removing the gearbox?

Thanks

I should have a spare gearbox by the weekend for an 80 TDI. Just wondering if there's an easy fix without resortign to gearbox removal.

Depending on how easy is to access it - I don't remember how it does looks like, however, I guess, gearshift shaft was on upper side of gearbox?

I'm thinking, remove snub bracket and gearbox mounts and tilt engine and box back?
