DAF-33-Variomatic

My late, great aunt had one of those when she was learning to drive. One of the funniest memories of my childhood, watching my dads expression after an hour in a car with her- She'd enrolled my dad's assistance with the driving lessons.

Picture this- he's a bloody awful instructor* and she was an ex-teacher, of the Victorian format school-ma'am variety, which essentially meant that by her mid sixties when she was learning to drive, she was an awful student.

Being an English teacher, she also had a tendency to correct grammar first, or deliberately take things too literally by way of making a point, rather than get the gist of the message being relayed to her.

Dad- at the next roundabout, go straight ahead
Aunt- obliges, literally, taking in the grassy knoll, and various flowers, on her journey literally over the top of roundabout.

She must have, singlehanded, kept the spares department at daf in business. She kept destroying the transmissions. She'd keep her foot resting on the throttle, causing the car to move unintended. So she'd brake. Followed by more throttle to get it to move, followed by even more brake, until the car had eaten yet more belts.

The car spent almost as much time in repairs as it did on top of roundabouts.
Still, whoever bought it would have been safe in the knowledge that the transmission had been tested to destruction!

*he decided he would teach me to drive, officially, until we almost came to blows

LOL, seen the new price? Some local antique dealer reckons they're a bit of a dabbler in classic cars.. I was trying to get my dad to buy that, just round the corner from us, in the rural sense. He bought a Zafira instead.

Yeah, but only because it was manufactured in Wellington! I kind of collect random local related stuff, and I do mean random!
