Ive driven both the typ81 and typ85 80 Sports, the typ85 was slightly quicker...had a little extra pickup through gears.
Both we're quick though....typ85 a bit more eager ![]() But Also tappetty from its hydraulic head. My choice would be to keep the original engine in, but its your choice..and cost consideration etc |

I'm actually of the opinion that you use which ever engine gets you up and running with the least distraction.
If it were a restoration for sentimental or investment reasons alone, then originality is important. But if you want use it, then that's the main focus. With 2 engines available, it takes the pressure off, somewhat. If the spare engine will go in with the minimum of fuss, great. It might be worth having a closer look at the existing engine. Long term poor storage of aluminium heads- porosity can lead to coolant leaks. Both engines may be at risk. Valve guides, and especially seals would probably benefit from attention. The original engine is opened up. How are the bores?

Indeed.
I've just remembered that I had a 'chattering' from the engine at about 72k miles, usually under load at relatively low revs. Brian Ricketts ( BRMotorsport and one of the original founders of GTi Engineering) told me that it was probably worn valve guides ( at 72 k miles I thought WHAT?), anyway a few months later the car spent a few days with him and was fixed , and he was correct! With hindsight I should have had the whole head flowed etc, but having just had that done to 'her' B3 Sport along with a Shrick split profile cam and Sebring exhaust, funds were a bit exhausted !..... So before it's back on the road guides and seals would be good to replace. |

Looks good man but as to the motor I would have just the the original rebuilt because its getting harder to find these things with the original motor in them.

...because the chap doing the welding will not be available for at least the next 10 days. Very frustrating as the plan was to get the welding finished by the time the owner of the paint shop came back from his Winter break....now everything is going to be on hold.
![]() Today saw another load of small annoying holes welded up . Plus some larger areas at the rear of the front wings where they bolt to the body. The N/S wing and body still need more attention as does the front apron . Rough guess is another two days work approx, maybe 3 days. £££££ ! Will plan to get the original engine running as that is still in situ. Then we'll see where we go from there.... You can all have some peace and quiet from me for a while but thanks for the advice , all much appreciated. ![]() |

We don't like peace and quiet. Its disquieting.
Are they allowing you to work on the car for other jobs? Like getting the fuel system sorted.

No, no time for the fuel system, too busy removing wings, parts from the engine bay to gain access, and interior trim in footwells to avoid conflagration. Then standing guard inside the car whilst welding taking place to extinguish any possible smouldering bits of stuck on carpet.
Plus have been doing wire brushing on front suspension which may be salvageable. Plenty of sweeping up too ! Car will be moved next week to adjoining workshop so may be able to get in under cover and do a bit more engine bay cleaning up, will have to see what the two bosses say. Her indoors , and the owner of the workshop! ![]() |
