Evening all,
Now that we're all apparently on the road to hell I think it only appropriate that I have a meaty motor to get away quickly from all the marches and military advances coming our way. Which got me looking at Mustangs... My A8 has spat its dummy out four times in 9 months and I'm the wrong side of £2k worse off because of it which got me thinking about defying my golden rule and going new for a change, but the only way I'd get a new car is if it's a suitably cool car (something I'd be chuffed walking up to in a car park) and one that's not going to completely pull my pants down on depreciation and thats the bit I can't fathom on the mustang. It's currently selling new, specced up in V8 form at £36k but because it's got a 9 month waiting time second hand ones are selling between £36-45k. I've had a PCP quote and the GMFV over two years is £20k (and just £16k over three years!). Now I know that there's always headroom in the figure quoted but that would mean losing close to £17k in two years ownership which I just cannot in any way justify, but because it's being sold in limited numbers with huge delays I talked myself into the resale in three years being around the £22-25k mark but now I'm not so sure. Course with it being first model in RHD there's no precedent to fall back on, so what's peoples thoughts on what it's more likely to be worth? For reference if it has 25k on the clock after three years I'd be surprised!

They are grim on fuel fella , I've seen em when I was at silverstone for the uk launch of the focus Rs and it did not float my boat at all . You should have got a focus Rs sorted and got a better residual

I really really wanted to love the focus RS but it really didn't do anything for me (and that on the same test drive averaged 22mpg for reference!). Was at goodwood today and saw the new Alfa Giulia V6 turbo and that looked fantastic but it's £60k!!! At this rate I'm going to sell my A8 and end up with our spare car (alfa) and cycle to work until I buckle and buy another RS6!

I really really want an R8 but as my wife rightly says being only a 2 seater it's just not really doable for us as a family as we'd all want to head out in the R8 on the weekends but wouldn't be able to. So it's gotta be a 2+2 min.

not a hope it will be worth £22-25k in 3 years - typical value on low depreciators is 50-55%.
Big cars, like an A8 for example are closer to 30-35% You'll be lucky if it's worth £18k

There are clear models that buck the trend though, most notable was when the new gen mini was launched, you could buy it, run it for a year and sell it for what you paid for it the demand was that high. Focus RS' seem to hold onto their value incredibly. £35k now but it'll still be £25k in three years and if well looked after the same again in five years! Hence looking at them, but a 15 month wait I'm not sure I could do even if I did fall for it!

Have you thought about importing a new mustang from the states, you will probably save yourself a few quid and from what I'm led to believe the road tax is cheaper on an import than on a uk car, or if you fancy something a bit bigger have a look at the Ford Raptor
