Audi 80 quattro - 1988/89 model 1781i DZ engine
Audi/Haynes manuals suggest my 5sp quattro gearbox oil is sealed for life - no need to change. After 21 years on same oil, surely replacing it would have some benefit? Anyone got any opinions/experience with this? I've always swapped tranny oil on the other 'classic' cars I've had, and it's always seemed to improve drive She don't always want to go straight into reverse-have tried adjusting linkage but no real difference. Can't see any bushes that might need replacing. Thinking that changing the gear oil won't fix that, but won't hurt the overall running of the car while I'm at it? Also, anyone got any opinions of what oil to replace the 21yr old muck with, if required? Seems everytime I've ever tried to get box oil in the past, it's always been a struggle & pricey too - would be nice to put something in that works as well/better than original & leave to stew for another 20 years, but budget a big issue Any thoughts/comments appreciated ![]() |

If you end up changing the oil make sure the filler plug comes out before you drain it !

it can't hurt doing it. It is a fairly easy job. I put some of that molslip stuff in my 4 speed 80 gearbox when it was hard to get into 4th gear. Made it easier.
Getting mine into reverse, I have to make sure the clutch pedal is touching the floor before it will go in easily. I might have to change the cable |

apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but still have the question as to what lube to use in a A80quattro box - supposedly sealed for life, but after 21 years, I'm guessing that life is up. audi have given me a part no of G 052 911 A2 - which is £13.50+vat per litre. I need 2.75L i.e. £47! Apparently, they can't give me an oil grade or rating, since they just use the part number to order & have no idea what is actually in the can.
anyone got any idea what grade to use in a 1988 A80Quattro box ? & also in the rear diff too. If I know what grade is ideal, I can at least try & find something cheaper than audi's nameless bottles. I know there's a lotta people on here with balls-out race spec quattros & I'd love to use the alsation's undercarriage, but just can't afford it - just a stock spec/grade of gearbox & diff oil is all I'm looking for until I win that lottery, though all suggestions appreciated ![]() |
