My silvering/chrome backing is pretty bad but I had better replacements. Can anyone describe the process to remove the headlights and replace the backing plates? Thanks.

To remove the headlights, first you need to remove the upper and lower headlight trims, including the plastic clip the middle screw fastens to on the lowers. It's also a bit easier if you remove the grille, but not absolutely necessary.
The headlights themselves have two screws underneath and two above (the one on the grille side is horizontal, the one on the wing side vertical i.e. through the slam panel). It's also worth popping off the intake tube behind the driver's side headlight, for easier access, then unplug the 3 wiring connectors each side. You should now be able to remove the headlight, it is a bit of a tight fit and I can't remember which way you need to tilt it first to get it out, top out first I think... Once out, remove the 7 metal clips holding the lens and housing together. The reflectors are push fit onto the adjustment stalks. The plastic stalks or the clips that hold the reflector in place on them might break as they get brittle over time, but you can get these on eBay (Highland or Classic Quattros I think), as you can also the adjuster rods/threads which you might as well replace while you're in there if any are broken/seized etc. Good luck! |
