Default Car insurance top tip!

Just looking around at a few quotes as car insurance is due. Cheapest around £350, but add my dad as a named driver (he has only driven it once but that doesn't matter) with me still as the main driver the quote comes down to £180!!

I had some thing similar with the wife , she's teaches aerobics and step at night ( she's a high civ servant during the day ) and I bought her a cheap transit connect as a runabout for her stuff but said she must insure it . Zero no claims and it was about £200 but putting me on it dropped it to £150 oddly

I thought this was common knowledge?

My dad is always added to my policy, doesn't knock much off these days as it's fairly cheap anyway but still takes £35ish off the quote.

I can tell you why the quote comes down by doing that but then I'll be in actuarial talk and you'll all fall asleep!

Putting a middle aged, greying, spectacle wearing sensible estate car driver on their policy would bring anyone's insurance down

Doesn't have to be old fogey.

When I added my wife to my insurance just after she got her licence at 29 it dropped also, despite only having a licence for a couple of months and insuring her on a 300bhp car!!

It's the diversification of risk that's reflected in the lower premiums.

Think it might be, but was shocked how much it came down, expected a few quid but not nearly 50%. Wondering if there is a glitch in the system, have saved the quote so now it's valid for 30 days.

Turning it on its head a little , mother in law got her renewal which had jumped up a lot probably as she's getting older ? , so I suggested adding my other half (her daughter)& me on , which brought the premium down , mind you it was the m.i.l

(Just for the record the m.i.l is older than me )

What do I do??
I am a middle aged, greying, spectacle wearing sensible driver

Slight exaggeration I'm not greying, I'm passed that stage, I'm white

When my son first passed his test at 17 3 years ago the combination of him owning the car & his mum being named was best. If I was added it went up by...wait for it... 3 grand!

This was on an old Mk4 1.4 Golf so I was clearly not old/grey/doddery enough
