I'm in mid change of a front wheel bearing on my CQ:-
Took the hub carrier off the car. Battered the hub(bit the wheel bolts to) from the bearing, drifted off the bit of the bearing race that was still on the hub. So I'm left with the hub carrier with the main part of the bearing still attached, normally there's a corroded cir-clip to remove before drifting the old bearing out but this has what looks like a cir-clip but it has no start/finish and seems to be part of the hub? How does the bearing come out? (still don't have a haynes manual!)....am I losing it?! ![]() Thanks in advance, John. |

MSH,
Thanks........but it's a quattro, the bit about front bearing replacement refers to removing cir-clip, mine doesn't seem to have a cir-clip.......it looks like part of the hub carrier would have to be broken to get the bearing out?? ![]() John. |

Have no idea, as I haven't changed any wheel bearing in my life yet, but I doubt there would be any differences in front suspension caused by different rear axle.
AFAIK wheel bearing is usually changed with hydraulic press. |

John, I had the same problem with mine (90 quattro 20v). I checked on vagcat and it showed no circlip even though it looked like you descibed, also there was no replacement circlip with the new bearing which was genuine audi. I pushed the bearing out with a fly press expecting trouble but it came straight with no problems! I think from memory that the bit I thought was a circlip was part of the cast of the hub. Also, from memory, I sure 10v cars have circlip I'm not sure which yours is.

John it difficult to explain but the bearing just pressed out and nothing broke, the ridge was either part of the hub or bearing can't remember which but there was definitely nothing retaining the bearing.
Royston.

there's no circlip on the later B3 cars.
The bearings are tapered btw - make sure you refit the new bearing the right way round

Forgot to add.
There's also a protective ring for the ABS sensor - that should just pull out
