Default I'll probably get shot for this - BMW alert

I've taken a bit of a fancy to a Beemer, I'm sorry to say.

Not just any old beemer though, a 535d touring in policeman white (not an ex police car). Something to replace my ageing and no longer so fun Octavia vRS estate so at least I'll still have the UR too.

Not bought it, but as long as the car checks out I will be picking it up on Thursday as it's only a few miles from me, which will be the first time I've bought a car that isn't hundreds of miles from me!

Let the abuse begin

Gawd bless the tinternet & super sleuthing skills.

Just found a post on bmwland by the very guy who's selling the car detailing all the problems it's had over the six months or so he's owned it. He's also exhausted all the 'cheap' options to fix the iDrive that's given up the ghost (and with it goes: Nav, parking sensors, radio, cd player, OBC, diagnostics & setup). Most worryingly was his post about a "burning smell" from around the battery where the fusebox is, so there could be wiring damage to sort.

We've agreed on a price that's £1,300-£1,500 under book value but fear that'll be swallowed up easily by the problems.

Shame as it's a really nice colour combination.

Seems like every other car nowadays, the more complicated they are the harder(read expensive?) they are to sort when they go wrong.
So.........Octavia it is then?!

Octavia is staying for now, but it's whether I still go for the beemer. He's dropped the price even more to keep me interested, which gives me a pot of £500-800 to rectify the computer/hardware/software problem and still have a car that's a grand less than the going rate.

One thing you taught me Dave is about Octavia VRS's

IF , repeat IF , i were you I'd walk away.

Having said that and with my past record of disasters I can hardly blame you if you say "you're a fine one to talk and give advice".

He's pretty desperate to sell then?

I'd walk, electrical/ECU/canbus fault could easily grow arms and legs?

I suppose you pay your money and take your chance?
