Default Should I buy a B5 A4?!

I am thinking of selling the other half's low mileage "58" Peugeot 207 to release some funds towards a deposit to help us move house hopefully in the new year. we buy any car has suggested its worth about £2,300 (to them).

The missus will obviously still need a shopping trolley, and it wont be the 90q so need to find a cheap-as-chips alternative, something that will last at least a year, be fairly bomb proof, but dont want to spend more than about £800 so I can keep the lions share of the sale of the Peugeot.

Soooo, I've been offered a lime green 1997 A4 Avant 1.9 Tdi (red "i") quattro for £500. Needs brakes and tyres for its mot which is just out. Its done just over 135,000 miles, recent timing belt (2012) has a tow bar fitted, sports seats, illuminated vanity mirrors, front leccy windows but sunroof not climate. Overall though its clean and from about 10 yards looks the part on 16 inch alloys.

Is this utter folly?! opinions please!

prob wouldn't be in 2 minds about buying if it was an 80 avant. Need to convince myself it would actually be a saving, just worried the Peugeot is going to start having French-car issues soon and by not trading it in for a new car feel like i'm losing out on any residual value it has!

If i dont go for it will drop you a line if u are that interested Chris, although that in itself inspires me with a bit if confidence..?

Sounds like a bargain to me.....just watch out that the turbo is working ok as I THINK that they tend to start giving up the ghost around that sort of mileage....not too sure about my 80Avant TDI which has similar mileage...its in having auto gear box oil and filter changed as well as the diesel fuel injection pump. Hope after that to be able to give it a good thrash and then I'll find out if in fact there is an issue with the turbocharger.
But for £500....
Last thought, maybe worth sticking a diagnostic plug in to see if there are any stored faults?
