Default Clutch problem

Been threatening to do the clutch on the 100 quattro for a few months now, anyhow a mate turned up on sunday and we got on about fitting the clutch, he told me to get in the car start it up and pump the pedal a few times to get preasure and then try the clutch.
After about 8 pumps i tried selecting first and hey presto it selected great, as did every other gear, took the clutch to biting point in every gear and it wanted to drive so nothing wrong with the clutch, tried it again tonight and took it for a drive and it drives ok.
Anyway my question is what would make the clutch stop working correctly all of a sudden and then start working again with a few good pumps, i have no visible leaks of fluid, could it be air or dirt in the system, or are the hydrolics known for any common faults?.

Thanks Bryan

cars parked up for any length of time tend to seize up.... so would you if you didnt move for ages.

ever gone and over done it doing sport... the next day your stiff as a board.... same for cars laid up for ages, needs a bit of tlc and USE again

I bought it needing a clutch and it was supposedly in daily use, the tale i got was the guy went to work in the morning and it was fine, come home time it wouldn't select a gear.
I bought the car unseen and sent my mate to pick it up and i was suspecting a hydrolic fault, but no visible leaks and no loss of fluid either, this has got me i may sell it now as i think i will be getting points on my licence now i have driven it.

If you are not loosing fluid out of the reservoir then would suspect that the slave or master cylinder seals have gone hard with age. Would plan in a master and slave cylinder swap sooner rather than later. Normally the seals fail and spray fluid either all over your carpet or inside the bell housing so if they have not been done before.....

A couple of years ago whilst in Belgium the clutch pedal on the wr started to drop untill it was on the floor. Repeated bleeding got it back up but dropped within a days use, over and over again during the period of a week, so to get back to UK I changed gear without the clutch. Then tried it again when back in this country and it seemed OK and has not been a problem since.
I can only put it down to some crap that lodged between the seal and the side wall of the cylinder which was released by the repeated bleeding.
