Bigger discs on Type 85?

Having recently test driven a Type 85 and become re-acquainted with the marginal braking I am researching the best way to get 276/280mm front discs on a Type 85/B2, but have some unanswered questions.

One way to do it is to get two-piece struts from a Type 89/B3, use Golf G60/Rallye caliper brackets and 280mm discs (also from Golf G60/Rallye) which are re-drilled and the centre hole enlarged for 4x108 PCD. (clearly a 15" wheel is required for clearance).

I see on here people talking about using later B4 ('92-'95) suspension, but I thought that the B4 had a wider track. Does it fit under a Type 85's arches? Can anyone who has done it give the lowdown? If it worked it would be ideal as it comes with big discs (well big compared to the puny 256mm Type 85 discs) and twin-pot calipers as standard.

Does the B3 saloon have the same track as the Type 85? I know the B3/B4 Coupe definitely has a wider track than the B3 saloon.

I would prefer to take the whole front suspension from a B3 90 20v or something (90 20v disc size 276mm??) and transplant it whole rather than mix and match, as it is neater, later and enables the whole suspension going in to be nicely cleaned up before installation without the car being off the road while it is done.

Very interested in people's thoughts on this.

so, are the later disc's and calipers from an 89 coupe onwards not a strait swap?

i had assumed that they were..

I thought they were the same stud pattern? But I take it it's not as simple as that?

Yeah, it is straight swap. But only if u are swaping from B3 also wheelhubs and wheels - B2 have 4x100, B3 4x108 With some exceptions.
For the brakes - I'll install in future in my B3 7A brake set. This means 276x25 in front, in rear standart discs. 276 mm calipers was factory installed on B3 7A and C3 10vt [not 20vt] Rear discs on B3 are identical - starting from 3A and ending with 7A. I don't know, is there problems with B3 calipers on B2 or isn't

Type 89 (B3) saloon and Type 89 Coupe have different track - Coupe is wider.

All the parts are not interchangeable, but I'm sure there is a combination that works.

I've confirmed that 20vcqdriver on his Type 85 CQ used early Type 89 struts with G60 280mm discs re-drilled for 4x08pcd and caliper brackets from C+R Enterprises to bolt up the original calipers.

Though in my case I need to confirm that the ABS sensors fit correctly in the same place as on the original struts so the ABS still works.

Facelift post '84 B2 (CGT and CQ) is 4x108.

Maybe just change hubcaps and wheels to 4x108 or 5x112? One of advantages - for theese sizes u can just buy brake discs in shop

Coupes? 1985 A80 1.8 sedan have 4x100

Sorry, I should have said 5 cyl models went to the 4x108. The 1982-4 'KK' 5cyl 80 quattro was 4x108 as well.

4 cyl 2WD models stayed 4x100 the longest.
