I'm doing a cambelt and water pump change on my KV engined GT and having difficulty undoing the camshaft pulley.Have tried the Haynes screwdriver against timing cover stud technique but the stud is starting to bend/move (have some spares).
The cam belt is off. Just wondering if anyone has any proven methods of jamming the pulley to get the nut undone. All help appreciated. |

try putting it into 1st gear and get some one to stand on the brakes and use a brakeker bar with a bit of scaffold tube on the end
![]() good luck DOH just re read title thought it was the crank pulley bolt (must get my eyes tested) can you get something to fit against the head to stop it moving |

Get a flat piece of 1/4 inch bar and weld on two thick bolts/lugs (or drill it and use locknuts to hold the bolts in) that correspond with the holes in the cam pulley and make yourself a counterhold.
That little stud that retains the cam belt covers will shear off if youre unlucky as its not meant to take that kind of loading. |

Cheers guys - yes, have already done the crank pulley bolt to my amazement!!
Will have to make up something to use as a counterhold - will get hold of Mr Heath and Mr Robinson in the morning! |

Cam pulley isn't a left hand thread is it?
Are you fitting a vernier pulley or doing a cam change. Not normally something that ever gets removed ![]()

Hi Dave - changing the cambelt and water pump. The camshaft pulley/sprocket needs to come off to remove the rear timing cover and the water pump?
Had been wondering if it could be a left hand thread?Anyone? |

Thanks Phil - off to try again in a minute.
Annoying thing is i did this many moons ago on my first coupe when i did an engine swap - but for the life of me can't remember how ![]() Now Dave has mentioned it, the thread issue seems to ring a bell - could it be clockwise to undo the nut on the camshaft sprocket?? - although no mention of this in the Haynes or Bentley. |
