Default Badly tuned 911

Whilst 'out and about' today, we were walking the dog at Rackham, a place where we have video'd quattros, TVR's and Rallyreps over the years... I've also heard Astons, Jags, Mexicos and GTR's all barking 'in the woods' for a bit of filming 'as it were'... The sounds echo through the trees making distant engine notes distinctly different to close up sounds... So 'long pull' acceleration is a mixture of close up engine induction, developing into a beautiful exhaust echo...

Until today...

There was a god almighty, and frankly, knackered and tinny din... Clearly not a 4 or 5 pot, a straight six wouldn't have been seen dead making such a din, and a V&, bless, couldn't have sounded as bad with only a spark, let alone an explosion....

No, it was a naturally aspirated Porsche 911, circa 2014, with tinsel LED's and an after market exhaust...

I wish I'd have had the time to video it, seriously, it was so right of dreadful it'd almost fallen off the right hand side and come back up on the left...

Tinny, rasping, harsh and ugly... Personally, I've never enjoyed performance 4pots, but christ on a bike, the terrible, almost broken sound that came out of this 911 flat six was on a different level of awfulness...

Clearly, I have little information on the 'spec' or the owner, but I can safely say, whoever you are, your car sounded bloody awful... Please put the original exhaust back on...

So...not impressed, then?

I have to say, on the whole, I'm rarely impressed with average 911 note. So a bad one would be plumbing un-plumbed depths.

I had exactly the same thoughts about two weeks ago sitting behind one at traffic lights in Prestwick, private reg. but not very old, awful bloody sound, literally sounded like a two stroke strimmer with a coke can as an exhaust. I take it they must sound better from the inside?

I wouldn't be surprised if it had the original exhaust on it - I've thought for quite a while how tinny they sound.

Hmmm, interesting observations about the original OEM exhaust as the car was 'new', certainly less than 5 years old... Ironically, today I followed an air cooled, naturally aspirated 993 911 in traffic, from what I could tell it sounded slightly clattery/tinny at idle but purposefully basey as it powered up. Certainly a far more agreeable sounding car above idle.
