Joss, the only change in the rear apron was at the 1984 MY changeover. The 'early' version of the apron can be made to fit the later cars by the addition of a 'hockey stick' piece of plastic, which sits between the apron and the rear part of the arch and pushes out the lower sides of the apron to match the wider wheels. I think there's a template for this in one or other of the manuals. My first Quattro was an '84 and had these fitted. The 'later' post ' 84 apron just has the profile of the apron at this point altered, so I can't think of any reason why, if the apron is for an early car, you couldn't just trim off the apron and redial holes to pull the sides in for the narrower wheels. I gave away a spare that I had not too long ago – sorry!
