Ive been working on the car all day on various things. This morning I relooked at my starting problem - noticed that the fuel pump wasnt whirring like it normally does when cold. So I had a hunch that perhaps the reIay brought second hand by a well known quattro ebay seller might be at fault - nipped along the road to gsf, £26 later and hey presto it worked. So basically the original relay was dodgy, I replaced it with what I thought was a working relay, when in fact it was also shagged. D'OH!! Oh well that teaches me a lesson, just buy new when it comes to these kind of things.
