I looked into this recently out of curiosity. There is a lot of info on the net good and bad but there are kits available with particular bulbs which are design to work with reflector (old style) headlamps. These bulbs have a black stripe up the side and have an R designation instead of an S D2R for example. Another misconception is the bulb rating, the higher number is not a good thing and creates more glare and give a blue or purple colour to the lamp, between 4000k and 6000k seems to be the best option.
