They looked for all the world like they were perched on orange boxes, dressed in turn of the nineteenth century driver's garb - back when the gentry sat inside and the driver sat out in the weather?
I haven't seen one now for perhaps a couple of decades - but they really were dressed up like a cross between a WWI flying ace and someone riding in an open-top sidecar. Goggles, leather helmets, 3" thick leather overcoats, etc. In all weathers and sometimes at ridiculous speeds. Those things must have been fun to drive.
