Lift the car up and check the linkage that comes away from the gear stick to the gearbox, there are bolts that maintain the rigidity of the linkage... Check these...

Early cars, like yours and my old GT (and the CQ's/Ur's) can work these loose, this makes 1st and 2nd hard (if not impossible) to engage as you can't generate enough 'left' movement on the 'box selector to engage the corresponding 'cog' at the 'box.

The cars also suffer if 'dragging through piled snow'... This can (and have experienced this)... Temporarily 'freeze' the linkage into the selected gear.
