V6/V8 floppy cam belt!
So, does anyone have an opinion on the hydraulic tensioner used on Audi V6/V8 cam belts? think it's the same Petrol and Diesel.
Mine seemed alarmingly floppy this afternoon when I looked under the cover (long story, but I should learn not to fiddle around too much....) but sorted itself out when I cranked for oil pressure. Does anyone know if this is normal, or is my tensioner on the way out: I'm assuming that there is some kind of ratchet in there that's supposed to stop it all slacking off? Guess at least that bit is screwed! Basically, do I panic now, or wait until the engine comes out later this year and sort it out then.... |
I'd panic now! Tooth jump springs to mind! Cheap oil filter with no drain back valve?:ihih: my 2.7 was making a small noise (cam chain tensioner on start up) when I got it, seven gallons of quantum platinum and a dealer filter later, silent.
Misread this as chain tensioner to begin with, edited! Fekinell.. Didn't know they had hydraulic cam belt tensioner too, bloody Germans.:shake::lol: |

Hmmm,
Cheap filter - check No drain-back valve, not sure. Massive PITA job to remove the font end - Definitely! Although delightfully today the starter decided to get stuck in the broken tooth in the ring-gear and sit spinning with no engine rotation going on! A couple of mums at the Nursery had to bump start me, which was interesting for my boy sat in the front, but slightly embarassing for me...... Maybe I'll take it off the road and do some maintainence! |
Looks like the toothed belt tensioner is sealed, like a little tailgate or bonnet strut? Not to worry, me just talking balix again, I thought it was fed in the same way as the chain tensioners.:wierdo:
