audi 80 1991 steering pump

Hi folks - has anyone had problems with parts supply for audi 80 steering pump. I checked that the car was covered and ordered a pump. Physical size etc is good but it only has feed and return pipes. My car has 3 pipes - no idea what the third is for. Any ideas?

I'm no expert, but where does it go to? What part in the engine bay? Is it an over-pressure fluid return pipe to the reservoir?

I'm definitely no expert at all. Its the smallest of the pipes. I will see if I can add some photos to the thread. ed

Ok I have the answer to the third pump connection. B3 Audi Quattros had a 2 stage pump fitted. 1st stage with a single connect is a brake servo pump. Behind that is a normal power steering pump with 2 connections. So now I either need a reconditioning kit or someone who can recondition the one I have.

A lot of people get rid of the bomb and fit a servo from a non quattro car. Its a fairly easy conversion and is more reliable. Then you can use your new pump

What engine is in your 80 ?

edwells59 23-01-20 05:50 PM

Tractor Dave thats an ace idea - these are now like hens teeth and if you can find a supply they are about 800 plus to replace and I have found no one who reconditions them. If you can point me at a thread to do that conversion the problem is solved. Thanks for the reply. ed

Try this. Related to S2 but yours is very similar. Error404 (Alex) can supply any bits you need.

Thanks Dave the thread looks good apart from when I tried to download the PDF detail instructions the file location has either changed or has been removed. Dont sopose you have downloaded that file in the past?

No I don't sorry. If you join the forum you can search through the technical pages and I'm sure the info you need will be there.

S2 forum is a helpful place to get info as many S2 owners obviously had (or still have!) more 'lowly' models for example the 20v 7a is well catered for, as well as UrS4s and UrS6s.

thanks folks just looking for S2 forum acceptance now

edwells59 28-01-20 10:04 PM

bingo got the pdf now for the conversion. Thanks folks.

Well done. Let us all know how you get on
