Fair play to you! So that explains why your so knowledgeable, ive got it now. And that also partly explains, to me at least anyway, why you have the Super Duppa Ghia Cortina with it's Ballast resisters, condensers and points.Only proper mechanics know how to deal with them. Let me think.....what was the dwell on mine....i can't remember. Dynamic Timing on the 2.0 pinto. 8 Degree BTC? Even now i miss that car.:cryin: I still have my Gunsons dwell and dynamic timing light.

48-52 off the top of my head!!
I like starting and charging systems, when I was in a workshop I didn't know much about amps/volts drop/parasitic-drain/resistance etc.....it was mainly servicing and nuts and bolts although it was good. I don't mind saying I have a distaste for new cars........maybe 'cause I don't fully understand them?!
:hmmm:

Perhaps they will at least get you started and then you could drop off the car at your garage for trouble shooting altho' by the sound of it , they are letting you down badly. Hope you get better luck soon.

I am a member of AA, but at the time I took it out I didnt think that I'd be needing home start as I had stupidly trusted that the garage had resolved the battery drain issues when they first had it in back in Nov 2013, esp. as they'd specifically hired in an electrical chap as well, so I only have the basic roadside assistance atm (doesn't cover home start or towing). :nonod:

Also had an offer this evening from a neighbour to try and jump start my car, but the garage now have my car keys as well as they were meant to be picking it up today, and my spare immobiliser stick doesnt work, so not just let down by the garage, but totally bol***** now as well! :grr:

One thing I am sure of is that as soon as they (haha) get it running, it's going straight to a VW specialist, they should at least should know what they're doing, right? only wish I'd known about them sooner!

Happens when the vacuum lines are not sealed.
Suspect perished diaphragms in the locking actuators in cars of this age.
The pump runs on until it either locks the doors normally if all is working, or times out after about 30seconds if there is a leak.
It's relatively easy to isolate the lines to each door, to establish which one is the cause. Start accumulating spares from scrappers.

Okay, car was booked in for some bodywork with Audi back in 2000, a week before it was due to go in, some a***-**** decided to take a liking to it (and several other cars that night I might add). Anyway, in addition to the insurance claim, Audi also arranged to have a cat1 alarm/immobilser fitted for me. Had a few issues with it initially, it's very advanced n confusing at that, but the chaps that fitted it have been extremely helpful in showing me how to programme it, and even supplied me with the installation manuals for it some years later in view of the system being discontinued.

Cant honestly remember when I noticed the pump running on issues, but I had the pump checked out last year (nought wrong with it), and also disconnected the fuse to minimise battery drain, but I've not had the cash until recently to get it fixed; is on my to do list for this year though.
Furthermore, I'm aware that the pump problem could be related to a vacuum issue/accuaters, but I've absolutely no idea where to start, let alone how to isolate each door. Trying to find my car model in a scrapyard around here is virtually impossible too; I did find one about 7yrs ago as needed a column switch, was miles away, but I picked up the part and fitted it myself, albeit that I had to borrow some tools to undo the steering wheel bolt, but hey, was fun. ;)

I have a nice battery charger from Halfords- RAC orange thing. Does a nice job, not too pricy. Compact. Bought it out of simple need.

My old Booster/charger which I have had for going on 25years, also Halfords supplied.

I have a really nice Fluke DMM (digital Multi meter) in my engineering toolkit. However, I bought a simple Maplins one for my dad a few winters back, at not much cost. Cheap enough, and good enough to measure volts, continuity, etc.

Battery charger next on list, hopefully over the weekend.
Can borrow mutimeter, just not sure how to use it

We can all fix cars by steadily replacing one part after another, without running proper tests, and eventually fix it ) possibly) but the cost...........:nonod:

Have been recommended to one just today, same one that the unreliable garage use though, so :hmmm:
